Design Slam is a fast paced, live design competition held annually as a part of Knoxville By Design. In conjunction with the Community Collaborative, this year’s competition focused on innovative concepts for redeveloping the alleyway at Speedway Circle in Historic Burlington. Unlike previous years, teams this year were composed not only of architects, but also landscape architects, interior designers and various makers.  Team ‘Squeakywheels’, which included MHM employees Adam Buchanan and Kevin White, took home the People’s Choice Award for their project ‘Timecircle’ which explored Knoxville’s relationship to transportation.

EAST TENNESSEE COMMUNITY DESIGN CENTER’S ANNUAL SUMMER PARTY

It’s time for the East Tennessee Community Design Center’s annual Summer Party. This year is special because the event is part of a larger Community Collaborative started by the Design Center that joins the AIA, UT school of Architecture, Knox Heritage, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, the Mayor’s Maker Council, City of Knoxville, and the ETCDC. The goal is to bring awareness to the potential in our communities and create a positive momentum for change. The event will be held in newly renovated buildings in Burlington but will showcase numerous locations in the community through a neighborhood tour. The event will also feature an exhibit of Burlington-based work from the UT College of Architecture, the AIA Design Slam, and the ETCDC Community Plan. This is a great way to help the Design Center bring awareness to this up and coming area and give back to Knoxville in a fun and enlightening way. Visit www.communitydc.org/ to buy your tickets or receive more information on how to participate.
