IJAMS NATURE CENTER
Canopy Walk
Ijams Canopy walk
YEAR:
2023-Ongoing
LOCATION:
Knoxville, TN
SIZE:
3,500 SF
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
MHM is proud to be working alongside Ross/Fowler Landscape Architects in a continued partnership with Ijams Nature Center to design a Canopy Walk that will extend past the boundary of the existing Visitor Center patio into the surrounding trees. Rooted in the Ijams value of accessibility, the Canopy Walk will serve the surrounding community and beyond as a unique connection with nature that is accessible to all.
Enveloped by shades of forest foliage, this path truly blurs the boundary between the built environment and the natural world. While progressing down the pathway, individuals are encouraged to gather in a series of spaces intuitively defined by the gradual division of solid, weathered steel railing walls that transition into nearly invisible stainless steel cable mesh. The Canopy Walk path not only generates a special, new way to accessibly experience the forest, but it also works to define space across an existing trail below.
