GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS INSTITUTE AT TREMONT - SECOND CAMPUS

YEAR:
2023-Ongoing

LOCATION:
Townsend, TN

SIZE:
42 Acres

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Throughout its 50-year history, the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont has excelled at connecting people with nature; believing that outdoor education creates lasting positive change for people and our planet. Because of this, Tremont has emerged as a leading residential environmental learning center with a broad reach and a vision that goes beyond what its current facilities can accommodate. In early 2019, Tremont purchased the 194-acre site on which to envision their second campus immediately adjacent to the Smoky Mountains.

Beginning in June 2019, Hennebery Eddy Architects (HEA) of Portland, Oregon, led a team in developing Tremont’s second campus master plan that aligns with a vision rooted in principles of ecological harmony, cultural heritage, sustainability, and leadership, charting the path to Living Building Challenge certification for the campus facilities. In late 2022, McCarty Holsaple McCarty was selected as the local Architect for the project to work with HEA to realize the multiple design phases of the 2019 master plan.

The Second Campus will be a world-class center that allows Tremont to continue its mission of connecting people with nature and expand its reach beyond its current capacity. The campus is designed with the goal of creating a unique, welcoming, and inclusive environment for outdoor education that demonstrates participatory ecology through culturally and environmentally resilient development. A fundamental project goal is to achieve Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification for the entire campus.

McCarty Holsaple McCarty is excited to work alongside Hennebery Eddy Architects to realize this aspirational and impactful project for our region.
